Ephemo privacy policy

Ephemo (拾痕) is a journal app. This page says what the app does with what you make, and what it does not do.

In short

The rest of this page gives the details.

What stays on your iPad

Your books, pages, handwriting, photos, tape rolls and stickers are saved in Ephemo's own folder on your iPad. Only Ephemo can open that folder, and it does not show in the Files app. Your choices in the app, such as whether the writing sound is on, are saved there too. None of it is sent to us.

Photos you add

You choose photos with the iPad's own photo picker. Ephemo sees only the photos you pick and does not ask to see your whole photo library. A copy of each photo you use is kept inside your journal. Cutting an object out of a photo happens on your iPad.

Searching your pages

To search your handwriting, Ephemo uses Apple's handwriting recognition, which runs on the iPad (iPadOS 27 and later). The words it reads and the words you type are kept in a search index inside the app.

Ephemo also adds your pages' words and book titles to the iPad's own Spotlight search, so you can find a page from the iPad's search. That index is on your iPad, and Spotlight can show a page's words in its results. A deleted book, and a page you ask Ephemo not to bring back, are taken out of it. To stop this, open Settings, tap Search, tap Ephemo, and turn off Show Content in Search (Apple's guide).

Purchases

Pro can be bought once or as a subscription. You buy it from Apple, through the App Store. Ephemo asks the system on your iPad whether you have Pro and keeps no record of your purchase of its own. It sends no receipt anywhere, and we never see your payment details or your Apple Account. For subscriptions, Apple's reports to us identify a subscriber only by a random number (Apple's page).

Export, sharing and web links

You can export your whole journal, or share a page or a book as an image or a PDF. Each one is made on your iPad and goes only where you send it, through the iPad's own share sheet. A few screens show a web address, such as the credit for a bundled photo, or Apple's Terms of Use on the Pro screen. Opening one is your tap, and it opens in your browser. The app does not visit any address by itself.

Backups made by your iPad

If you back up your iPad, for example with iCloud Backup, Apple's backup may include Ephemo's data. That backup is made by your iPad, under Apple's rules, and does not come to us.

Sensors

When a shiny sticker is on the page, Ephemo reads the iPad's tilt so the shine moves with your hands. It is used on the spot and is not saved or sent. Ephemo plays writing and paper sounds. It does not use the microphone, the camera or your location.

Crash and usage data

Ephemo collects none. We have not added any analytics or crash-reporting code, and the app's own code does not talk to any server of ours.

Apple may give us some information if you choose to share it. If you turn on Share With App Developers in Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements, Apple may pass us crash reports and usage statistics about Ephemo, in a form that does not identify you (Apple's page). If you test Ephemo through TestFlight, Apple also shares with us your crash reports and any feedback you send, with details such as your device model and iPadOS version and, if we invited you by email, your name and email address (Apple: tester information, Apple: tester feedback).

Keeping and deleting your data

We hold none of your data, so there is nothing for us to delete. On your iPad you are in charge. Deleting a book moves it to Recently Deleted, where it stays for 30 days and can be restored, and then it is removed. Deleting Ephemo from your iPad removes the app and its data from the iPad (Apple's guide). Copies you have exported or shared, and any backup of your iPad, are yours to delete.

Children

Ephemo is a general-audience journal app and is not aimed at children. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it holds none from children either.

Changes to this policy

If what Ephemo does with your information changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
